These two versions tell the same story, but with interesting variations in some details as a result of the hit-and-miss attention that Tolkien paid to the works at different times over the years (with the interruption of WWII).Additionally, some of the intriguing references to other characters in the story get fleshed out by inclusion of other tales and other histories dealing with the same time frame of the main story.
